The Titanic was one of the most luxurious cruise ships ever built. It cost about $7.5 million to construct, which is about $190 million adjusted for inflation. The British passenger liner, which was operated by the White Star Line, tragically struck an iceberg on April 15, 1912. The ship did not have enough lifeboats for all the passengers and there were few survivors. Of the 2,224 passengers and crew on board, more than 1,500 died. The ship never reached its New York destination, and today the wreck sits at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Artifacts recovered from the wreckage have sold at auction for hundreds of thousands of dollars. There were many incredibly wealthy individuals on board the Titanic’s maiden and only voyage. Many of these wealthy individuals perished, but some survived. Titanic’s richest passenger, John Jacob Astor IV, was a business magnate who perished when the Titanic sank. He left the majority of his $150-million fortune to his son Vincent. That fortune would be worth about $3.5 billion today. Other famous first-class passengers included Ben Guggenheim, who was worth about $4 million, and Charlotte Drake Cardeza who stayed in a parlour suite during the Titanic’s maiden voyage. She had about $5,500 in cash onboard – that’s about $132,000 adjusted for inflation. The money didn’t survive the sinking of the Titanic, but Cardeza did. Here’s a virtual tour of some of the Titanic’s most luxurious rooms and features. Keep watching to learn more about this expensive and famous ship.
